On Friday, March 18th, the U.S. House of Representatives passed the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thecrownact.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">CROWN (Creating a Respectful and Open World for Natural Hair) Act<\/a>, a bill that would ban race-based hair discrimination in the workplace and in federally funded programs like public housing.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<center><blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">BREAKING: <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/HouseDemocrats?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@HouseDemocrats<\/a> have PASSED the <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/CROWNAct?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#CROWNAct<\/a>, a critically important civil rights bill that would explicitly prohibit discrimination on the basis of hair texture or hairstyles commonly associated with a particular race or national origin. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/FLqBBIIsmw\">pic.twitter.com\/FLqBBIIsmw<\/a><\/p>\u2014 House Judiciary Dems (@HouseJudiciary) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/HouseJudiciary\/status\/1504834977426456597?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">March 18, 2022<\/a><\/blockquote> <script async=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/center>\n\n\n\n<p>For those who aren\u2019t aware, this is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetease.com\/the-crown-act-just-passed-in-the-house-heres-what-happens-next\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">the second time <\/a>that this legislation has passed through the House. During September of 2020, the CROWN Act was first passed through the House, and later blocked by the then-Republican ruled Senate. With this most recent passing, the bill will soon head to the Senate to be voted on, under the guidance of legislative sponsors Democratic New Jersey Sen. Cory Booker and Rep. Bonnie Watson Coleman.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While the hope is that this time around will be different, it is worth noting that the Senate is currently split 50-50 and the bill is facing a lot of opposition from Republicans who feel that there are already many protections in place for discrimination of this type.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In fact, Rep. Watson Coleman even mentioned in a<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/RepBonnie\/status\/1504820269671759877\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"> recent Twitter post <\/a>that 188 House Republicans temporarily prevented the passage of the CROWN Act on the last day of Black History Month.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<center><blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">On February 28 \u2014 the last day of Black History Month \u2014\u202f188 House Republicans temporarily obstructed passage of the <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/CROWNAct?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#CROWNAct<\/a>.<br><br>Despite what my GOP colleagues may tell you, this bill is too important to give up on. This represents a blatant disregard for the struggles of Black people \u2014 especially Black women and girls \u2014 in our country.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The good news is that President Biden has already voiced <a href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/SAP-H.R.-2116.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">his support <\/a>for the bill, saying he would sign it into law if it were to reach his desk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe President believes that no person should be denied the ability to obtain a job, succeed in school or the workplace, secure housing, or otherwise exercise their rights based on hair texture or hair style,\u201d the White House said in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/SAP-H.R.-2116.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">a statement<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They added that, \u201cthe Administration looks forward to working with the Congress to enact this legislation and ensure that it is effectively implemented.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<center><blockquote class=\"instagram-media\" data-instgrm-captioned=\"\" data-instgrm-permalink=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/CbXQoBpBM_l\/?utm_source=ig_embed&amp;utm_campaign=loading\" data-instgrm-version=\"14\" style=\" background:#FFF;
