For anyone not aware, formaldehyde is a colorless, flammable, and highly toxic gas that can cause respiratory problems when inhaled, sprayed through the eyes, or absorbed in the skin. It\u2019s used in a variety of household products\u2014from cosmetics to medicines\u2014and is linked to an increased risk of certain cancers. Currently, the FDA only discourages consumers from buying and using hair straightening products containing formaldehyde, according to a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fda.gov\/media\/146214\/download\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">fact sheet<\/a> from the agency.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<center><blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">\ud83d\udea8NEWS: FDA responded to my letter with <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/RepShontelBrown?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@RepShontelBrown<\/a> by proposing a ban on harmful chemicals in hair relaxers.<br><br>This is a win for public health\u2014especially Black women disproportionately put at risk by these products as a result of systemic racism &amp; anti-Black hair sentiment. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/i8ItGpvi81\">https:\/\/t.co\/i8ItGpvi81<\/a><\/p>&mdash; Congresswoman Ayanna Pressley (@RepPressley) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/RepPressley\/status\/1710376828764913871?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">October 6, 2023<\/a><\/blockquote> <script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/center>\n\n\n\n<p>This ban proposal comes after Congresswoman Ayanna Pressley (D-MA) and Shontel Brown (D-OH) urged the agency to investigate the safety of chemical relaxers, which <a href=\"https:\/\/academic.oup.com\/jnci\/article\/114\/12\/1636\/6759686?login=false\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">recent research<\/a> has linked to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetease.com\/new-study-shows-chemical-hair-straighteners-may-be-putting-black-women-at-a-greater-risk-for-uterine-cancer\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">an increased uterine cancer risk for Black women<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While announcing the supposed forthcoming ban in a <a href=\"https:\/\/pressley.house.gov\/2023\/10\/06\/after-pressley-brown-inquiry-fda-proposes-ban-on-harmful-chemicals-in-hair-relaxers\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">statement<\/a>, Rep. Pressley called it \u201ca win for public health \u2014especially the health of Black women who are disproportionately put at risk by these products as a result of systematic racism and anti-Black hair sentiment.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She added, \u201cRegardless of how we wear our hair, we should be allowed to show up in the world without putting our health at risk. I applaud the FDA for being responsive to our calls and advancing a rule that will help prevent manufacturers from making a profit at the expense of our health. The Administration should finalize this rule without delay.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>What Happens Next?<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>While the FDA has made an important step in finally ensuring the safety of hair relaxers to the public, the rule isn\u2019t in place just yet. In fact, per <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/relaxers-black-hair-fda-formaldehyde-dcb328eae7fe52aed847b55abd6ab643#\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\"><em>AP News\u2019<\/em> reporting<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reginfo.gov\/public\/do\/eAgendaViewRule?pubId=202304&amp;RIN=0910-AI83\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">the notice of a possible rule <\/a>was only recently added to the FDA\u2019s regulatory process and the agency hopes to publish an advance notice of proposed rulemaking by April 2024.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<center><blockquote class=\"instagram-media\" data-instgrm-permalink=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/reel\/CyjRhnxsaXw\/?utm_source=ig_embed&amp;utm_campaign=loading\" data-instgrm-version=\"14\" style=\" background:#FFF;
